First tiny house goes mainstream
-$69,000 for brand new eco-home*-
New Zealand’s largest property listing site has its first ‘tiny house’ for sale, as Kiwis search for different ways to get onto the property ladder, says realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor.
“The tiny house movement has been growing in response to the high cost of home purchase, particularly in the main centres,” says Vanessa.
“It’s also appealing to a demographic seeking a more simplified way of life and concerned about their environmental footprint.”
The 22 sq.m. prototype Ecotiny house listed on realestate.co.nz (Wellington region) is powered by solar panels and wind turbine generation for the option of living off the grid. The light-filled open plan layout has living, dining, kitchen and bedroom areas and a separate toilet/shower. The built-in cabinetry and furniture is Scandinavian style.
The Ecotiny house has attracted significant online attention. Te Aro (where the Ecotiny house is currently sited) was the most searched suburb for homes in the Wellington region in April. The average number of unique views to individual properties in Te Aro was 462. By contrast, the number of views to the Ecotiny house has been 2,047 in less than a month.
The house also gives options for parents/family wanting to help (e.g. buy or relocate the eco-home on their property)** and then sell it once their children have got their foot onto the property ladder.
